Black Mesa – February 2018

All of the scouts and adults arrived at the Elks lodge early on Saturday morning and after arranging rides, drove to the Superstition mountains and met up at the First Water Trailhead. The troop hiked to the campsite, carrying all their gear. The hike there was about 4.5 miles and when everyone got to the campsite, they set up their tents. The scouts then hiked up the Black Mesa plateau and explored some caves. After just staying at camp and hanging out for a bit, all the scouts searched for firewood and brought a lot back leading to a nice fire. Everyone cooked their dinners and Mr Harnisch told a story about the Lost Dutchman. There was a beading ceremony and the adults stayed around the fire for a bit longer, while the scouts went to their tents and talked a bit before going to bed. In the morning, everybody cooked their own breakfasts and packed up. The troop did a trash line, making sure no trash was left behind. This time we hiked back to the trail head using a different route, which was also about 4.5 miles. The troop met up at the parking lot and everyone drove back to the Elks in Phoenix. – By: Liam Yee
